W9 Thursday Learning Blog

Good morning Reception Class πŸ˜Ž Welcome to Week 9 Virtual School!

There are 3 different learning areas for you to work on every day.
Try to follow the instructions carefully and complete the tasks according to your learning pace!

Please be prepared to share some of your work during the end of the day Zoom meeting at 11:30 am with your teachers. Don't forget to upload at least one task on Tapestry for teachers to see how hard you've been working daily! Keep up the good work πŸ˜Š

1) Library Book (Reading & Speaking)
Learning Objectives (LO): 40-60+ Uses vocabulary and forms of speech that are increasingly influenced by their experiences of books. Enjoys an increasing range of books. Knows that information can be retrieved from books and computers. Reading ELG - Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Spend some time listening to David Williams free audio stories for your library time! David Walliams currently uploads his audio books 11:00 am daily.

You can also use Oxford Owl to look for some audio books as well!

Oxford Owl Library

Amazon Audible provides free audio books for children at the moment for a month.
Enjoy browsing and listening to some stories at home πŸ˜‰

Some questions to ask your child while reading together:
Parents Reading Prompts

Let's read a story Building a House by Byron Barton today!

2) Mathematics (SSM)
Learning Objectives (LO): ELG - Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognize, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

There are two different types of Maths activities. Please feel free to move from one star challenge to another depending on your mastery remembering what works best for you.
Don't forget that learning is fun πŸ˜‰

Please download and work on Numbots daily if possible.

Focus on comparing weight

⭐ - 1 Star Challenge:

Today we will be using a scale or become the human scale to compare the weight of different objects. Gather some objects around the house such as toys, books, tins, etc. Can you tell which object is lighter? Which one is heavier? How do we know?

Have a look at the video of how the scale moves when objects are heavier or lighter.

Now, you will become the human scale! Can you choose two objects and hold them in your hands while stretching your arms out like a balance scale? Which object or side feels heavier and which feels lighter?

Show us a picture of you becoming a human scale! πŸ˜„

Heavy and Light Sorting Activity

⭐⭐ - 2 Star Challenge:

We have made our own spring scale yesterday. Today you get to use the spring scale you have made to compare the weight of different objects!

1) Choose two objects to compare the weights.
2) Place one object at a time in the spring scale.
3) Draw a line or mark where the scale has landed.
4) Repeat with the other object.

Which one is heavier? Remember heavier object goes further down! 😊

If you would like to make a balance scale using a hanger, follow through the video and compare how heavy things are using the scale too!

How a balance scale works!

Try to predict which object will be heavier or lighter to have some more fun!
Remember heavier objects make the band stretch more! Thus, it goes down.

Complete the Scales Activity

3) Topic (Our Homes) - Speaking
Learning Objectives (LO): ELG - Children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.

We have all learnt that we live on our planet Earth. Let's find out where exactly do we live on our Earth? That's right. We do live in Brunei, but we would like to take the time to look for which part of Brunei we live in.

We all live in Brunei but we do not all live in the same home! We all have separate homes, sometimes on the same road but even then we have different addresses and numbers.

Can you spot and describe your home and your neighborhood using the technology and Google Earth Map program? Are there many mountains or trees around your house? Or is your house surrounded by other houses? Are there rivers or parks around your house?

Try to explain what you have found out exploring the google map! 😊
